The Society for Technology and Development underscores the importance of rural
industrialization in India, given the country's persistent rural population, projected to remain
above 50% by 2050. This demographic trend necessitates the creation of non-farm jobs in rural
areas, especially with agricultural employment declining and urban-industrial sectors. Utilizing
science and technology (S&T) inputs, the organization aims to bolster the underdeveloped
manufacturing sector and enhance skills among small farmers, artisans, and agricultural
workers. Women, who possess valuable indigenous knowledge, are particularly targeted for
skill development. With over three decades of operational experience, the organization has
earned recognition as a Core Support Group under the DST's SEED Division, championing the
Technological Advancement for Rural Areas (TARA) initiative.
