Environment and development are two axioms which have been at loggerheads for very long and this has given rise to the idea of sustainable development. The sustainable development criterion though is in fact akin to our country as we have always propagated the idea of ‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbkam. India was whom to this idea and incarnated land with the name ‘Motherland. However In English speaking world the idea was first introduced in 1976 in the Bariloche Model and given further impetus in 1987 through Brundtland Commission which proposed that Sustainable development is development that satisfies the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future.
