Nako Village Is In The Western Himalayas At The Height Of 3600 Mtrs Above Sea Level Since Ancient Times The Original Name Of The Village Called nako Would Mean knaygoh Or Gateway To The Holy Place Thus Says The Buddhist Retreat Tashigang. Another Stop On The Pilgrimage Route To Kailash The Holy Mountain Nako Village Is A Important Centre Of Buddhism. There Are At Least Seven Temples Of Different Periods Distributed All Over The Village Including A Monastic Complex On Its Western Edge Boasting Four Temples. This Complex Preserves The Earliest Artistic Heritage. The Austere And Un-Ornamental Exteriors Of The Buildings Give Little Hint Of The Important Artistic Religious Legacy That Lies Within Its Walls Nako Also Boasts Of Saint Padmasambhavas Footprints And A Beautiful Lake Around Which The Village Is Built. Nako Is A Trekkers Paradise It Is The Base Camp For The Trek To The Reo-Purgyal Peak-Namgia The Last Indian Village Bordering Tibet Can Also Be Reached From Nako En Route To The Somang Monastery And The Tashigang Gompa Monastery These Monasteries Are Much Revered By The Locals The Monastery Of Nako With Murals Dating Back To The 11th Century Allegedly Founded By Ringchen Zangpo IN 996 AD Nako Monastery Is One Of The Most Important Repositories Of The Ancient Tradition Of Painting In India. The Dukhang Or Prayer Hall Of The Monastery Has A Vairocana Shrine A Complex Of Small Old Temples With Fine Old Sculptures And Frescoes Sadly Some Of Them Neglected. There's Also A New Temple Built In Recent Years. There Are Four Buddhist Temples With Murals And Stucco Images On The Northern Side Of The Lake In Keeping With The Monasteries Associated With Rinchen Zangpo The Ancient Monastery At Nako Can Also Be Visited And For The Trekking Enthusiasts.
