About Dharamshala International Film Festival
The Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF) is a prominent independent film festival in India, founded in 2012 by filmmakers Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam. It aims to promote independent cinema in the Himalayan region and support local filmmaking talent. The festival creates a cultural platform for diverse communities to engage through cinema, emphasizing that the celebration of film does not need competition or awards.
DIFF showcases a variety of films, including contemporary features, documentaries, shorts, animation, and experimental works, with around 80 films presented each year. The festival also features panel discussions, Q&As, and masterclasses with filmmakers. Additionally, DIFF runs a community outreach program to engage local audiences and organizes community screenings. It collaborates with the Festival des 3 Continents to support independent filmmakers in South Asia through the FilmLab South Asia initiative. The festival takes place annually in McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala, attracting a diverse audience from India and beyond.
